Cash Colligan – Ashes Video

On April 29, 2014 Cash Colligan released a song and video “Ashes (Fall Out Boy Remix)” to YouTube.

There has been some controversy with this song and it has been out for only 24 hours. As a fan of The Cab, I can say I enjoy this rap. It is clever and entertaining. Many fans of The Cab are upset by this song and video and, while I can see why, I find it to be harmless.

Song Review:

One Word Description: Bold

This song comes in two parts. The first part is an homage to Fall Out Boy and the second the story of his history with The Cab.  The first part is genius. Cash cleverly incorporates Fall Out Boy song titles into his lyrics. It is clear how much he respects and admires the band. Part two is a bit darker. Cash was a founding member of The Cab, but left the band a number of years ago. In this rap, he shares his experience of being in the band and tells what he thinks of them now. Lyrically, this rap is great. He relates what he wants to say in a catchy way.

Video Review:

One Word Description: Shocking

In the video, Cash is seen burning old school The Cab merch. He throws everything into the fire from CDs to a drum head to clothing items, even some picture of him with the members. During the burning scenes he is even wearing a marred The Cab tshirt from years ago. The scenes fit in with the second part of his rap. These scenes were not quite upsetting for me, but I would have rather not watched them. This is mainly for the reason that I would have loved to take all that stuff off his hands so he didn’t have to burn in. All in all, this video is very well done and it sends the message that he is done with The Cab. He is over anything that may have happened in the past.

The Cab – Lock Me Up EP

On April 29, 2014 The Cab released the Lock Me Up EP to iTunes. This is their second studio EP and it serves as a buffer between albums. This release coincides with the anniversary of the release of their first album, Whisper War.

One Word Description: Sexy.

Honestly, that one word describes it all. While many of their past songs have had risque themes and vibes, this EP takes that to a whole new level and I love it. The suspense leading up to this EP was insane. It has been over two and a half years since their last release, and fans were getting impatient. For the past couple weeks, The Cab has been posted video clips and song snippets to their Instagram account every day at 4:29 pm PST. This EP was well-worth the wait and it’s only a matter of time until their new full album is released.

Before I go into the songs on this EP, let’s talk about the title. I, for one, am a little upset with the title because it doesn’t follow the alliteration theme of all their past releases. Only their first demo EP Drunk Love did not have an alliterative title. All releases after that – Glitz & Glamour EP, Whisper War, Lady Luck EP, and Symphony Soldier – had amazingly alliterative titles. This could just be the English major in me that mourns the loss of this theme, but I know other fans are disappointed in this as well.

Onto the songs. The whole EP shows the growth of the band through the years. The sound has matured, as well as the lyrics. The EP opens with the title track and damn. It’s good. It’s strong and powerful and enticing in all the right ways. The following song “Moon” is just as amazing. Personally, I like to think of this song as a sequel to “Intoxicated” from Symphony Soldier. They have similar vibes and I think would work well together. Following “Moon” is “Numbers.” In each of their albums, they always seem to have one song that really sticks out as a “love song” and this is that for Lock Me Up. It slows down the EP a bit to get more emotional. Next up is “Stand Up.” This is an empowering song with lots of motivating lyrics. The EP closes with “These Are the Lies,” an amazing break up song. It’s about lying to yourself to make it through, which is something everyone can relate to. This is a great way to close the EP. One fan pointed out that the EP has an old-school Justin Timberlake feel, which is an on-point description.
